Because it's easy to recognize as a prompt, I would guess. You can
customize it by importing the 'sys' module and changing the values of
sys.ps1 and sys.ps2.

In usenet posts >>> gets confused for quoted material 3 levels deep (which on my newsreader is shown as coloured vertical bars on the left).
