If I rebuild python-elementtidy from source and install the package, then the script given works as expected.
The sizes of the .so's are identical between my version and the one in the debian archives. There are some differences between the output of 'readelf -s' though. The sizes of several of the functions is different between versions. It looks like the signature of some of the functions in libtidy may have changed between versions, in which case python-elementtidy needs to be relinked.
