Yes this is the case it seems with 2012.  I had put a bug report in a long
time ago about it and they said all I needed to do was compile Qt
4.7.1....I had already done that but taking the phonon.dll generated from
that compile and putting it in the Maya 2012 bin directory didn't work.

In 2013 they have included phonon.dll.  I took that .dll and put it with
our Maya 2012 install and it seems to work.

Hopefully that works for you as well.
