I was able to get things working by downloading Maya 2015.  I was resisting 
this because the projects I have been working on were 2014, but this is 
unrelated so it's okay.  Not sure what the problem is, but I see in one of 
the Maya 2015 Service Packs, a mayapy interactive prompt issue similar to 
mine was resolved, so maybe it had been a problem for a while?
