If you’d rather use an existing node to solve your problem, try selecting a vertex and hit Particles -> Emit from Object. It will create, amongst other things, a geoConnector <http://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2015/ENU/Maya-Tech-Docs/Nodes/index.html> which will provide you with the vertex position in worldspace. You can delete the other nodes and, optionally, recreate the node and its connections via Python if you’d rather skip the delete step.
