My suggestion: I am thinking about how to indicate that an object is selected. I propose that any and all selected objects change color to something different, e.g. white. This has at least two good features: 1. You can immediately tell that you have selected the objects you wanted to select. 2. It reminds the user that he is in select mode, and has selected something. This answers your issue above. Then, leaving the ability to select on all the time doesn't present a problem. I also propose that if you hit <escape> then all selections are cleared. Comments? Meanwhile, I can look at the code to see how this feature might be implemented. . . . .
