It's 3.5mm. I think a standard microphone would work. It's not that the camera doesn't have a mic. It does have one, and it's a pretty good condenser microphone. The only problem is that it's away from the speaker. Some sort of clip-on microphone would be great. A dynamic directional microphone would be not as good - if the speaker walks away from it, sound level drops quickly. I'd say that only a clip-on microphone or a hand-held microphone would be better from the built-in condenser one.
