I'm confused here. People have been managing big coding projects with an editor and a command line for ages. More to the point, many folks still do it, even when they have the option of a nifty GUI IDE. In fact, one thing I realized when working with Windows and the old MacOS, was that one reason that you needed an IDE so badly on those systems, and not so much on Unix, was that in a way, Unix IS an IDE. I still find grep easier to use than any "find in files" feature in an editor or IDE, for example.

several months trying to find something which works like the (payware)
tools we are accustomed to.

Did you mean "would NOT spend the ...."?
