Does anyone have experience with jEdit? (www.jedit.org) It's an GPL'ed all purpose editor written in Java that claims to also support Python. I had no time to test it yet besides that it runs on MacOS X, but it's extremely configurable and enhanceable (plugins, macros etc.).
