Well, Paris marathon (of course a *crowded* one) is something to do
once, because it's for most parts in the heart of the city. I ran it
three times as this is the place I live...:-)

The Medoc marathon, close to Bordeaux is the second largest in France,
and known to be the most "fun" one, as the race is done through all
wineyards in Bordeaux wine region (food points *really* offer
wine...:-)). About 6000 runners, though.

The Mont St Michel marathon has great reputation among french runners
as well as the Nice-Cannes one (it was run last week-end). Around 2000
runners, I'd say.

Last recommendation would be the Cheverny marathon in the Loire valley
(it's run the same week-end than Paris marathon, 2nd Sunday of April
and is often a good backup race for those who couldn't register for
Paris). About 1000 runners.
