Somehow I missed that, version 0.15 of GarminFIT solves this issue.
There is also a newer version of fit2tcx, this works as well after 
applying:

    use FindBin;
    use lib $FindBin::Bin;

I have no new FIT file to import yet though, so I can only verify that 
it manages to open the file.
