libusb 1.0 is more matured than OpenUSB. OpenUSB has an advantage that it works for hotplugging (but with deprecated HAL under Linux). It also works under Solaris. On the other hand, libusb-1.0 works under Windows. Also FreeBSD (8.0 and later) has libusb-1.0 API compatible wrapper.
