You are right, thank you!

However it works only if I run the commands as super user (otherwise I
get the permission error). Is there anything I could do to overcome
this limitation? Maybe changing my group permissions? On the shell I
get:

    mac@jabbar:~$ groups
    mac adm dialout cdrom plugdev lpadmin admin sambashare

should I belong to some more? (Or is the problem totally unrelated to
group permissions?)
