I've managed to clone libusb 1.0 from https://github.com/libusb/libusb and
install it successfully using GNU Autotools and Make.
Adding..
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib
...to the Python virtualenv postactivate script streamlines things nicely,
as well.
