I could reproduce similar messages only by removing the afm files from the TeX installation. Normally, they are found under <texmf>/fonts/afm or in my specific case as /usr/share/texmf-texlive/fonts/afm/bluesky/cm/cmr10.afm > Is there anything I can do to fix this? In a recent texlive installation (I am using the texlive packages from Debian stable), they are included in the base installation from texlive. Otherwise, you should install them manually -- they should be downloadable from CTAN (try ftp.ctan.org): search for the cm fonts from bluesky. The installation of fonts in TeX requires several steps which are documented in the WWW and probably in the README files that come with the bluesky fonts.
