The default line width in PDF (1.4) is also 1pt. I would apply the principle of the best-looking default output. Note that the lines should not be too fat as compared to some text put in its vicinity. As we use the TeX-cm font by default, a linewidth of 1pt is too fat and looks ugly. The strokes in the text are about 0.5pt, which looks good with the current default linewidth. This may be the reason for the current default, I do not quite remember the discussion about it.
