Using virtio devices really only applies to the -M virt machine types. All the other device types are modelling real hardware with various specific block devices. Generally you boot system emulation with a kernel (and maybe an initrd) as their is no BIOS to boot stuff for you. Modern ARM systems (by which I mean virt) can be booted with an EFI BIOS (-bios QEMU_EFI.fd) which will then figure out the best place to boot from and can load the kernel themselves. -- Alex Bennée
