Does the master branch compile for you with 'export CFLAGS="-O2 -Wall -Werror=return-type"'? I prepared a patch to deal with it, and indeed it looks like the compiler might be able to spot the fact that only values between 0 and 7 can ever appear there. Apparently it fails to recognize that. Olaf
