The last version from fedora's virtio driver repo with the boot floppy provided 
is virtio-win-0.1.190-1.

You might be able to perform a drive controller swap as opposed to reinstalling.

Essentially :

On Vmware's end, add new hardware via control panel's add new hardware and 
specifying you have the disk,  and see if you can manually install the virtio 
driver and then shutdown.

Then try booting the instance in qemu while using the virtio device as the main 
drive controller.

If that does not work, you could try to remove the controller in Vware's end 
and then shutdown and boot from qemu.
