It depends on what you want to do. For a one-off patch there is no reason to use git and clone the repository. If you want to continue to contribute, keep your working copy up to date, and be able to push changes, then using GitHub makes sense.

If you are doing QGIS work and wish you had SVN access, then the git route is for you...
