If a layer is unchecked it is not drawn in the map.

If a layer is checked but its parent is not, it is not drawn in the map.

PS: we highjacked a thread about reliable way to identify a group,
    may be better to start two new threads, one for group visibility
    behavior and another for radio vs. checkbox configuration
