Thank you, Hugo! That was a good tip, as I was checking the files I enabled the "allow executing file as program". Whether that was the magic trick, I am unsure but in any case now it's working. Same goes for the import qgis.core in the Ubuntu terminal, no more import errors.
Hopefully, I can actually start to work on my plugin.
