Hi Grant,

Probably my fault, I arranged a new ssl certificate for *.qgis.org but did not put it on the qgis server(s) yet... so current certificate is not valid anymore. Will do this asap...

To be more precise: during startup, QGIS is requesting the latest version of QGIS by requesting:

https://ubuntu.qgis.org/version.txt [0]

And that one does not have a valid certificate at this moment.

@devs: I still think this should be an opt-in option instead of current situation
