It is possible to compile ECW support in GDAL as a plugin: http://wiki.gfoss.it/index.php/Come_abilitare_il_supporto_ai_file_ECW_in_GDAL_e_visualizzarli_in_GRASS_e_QGIS#Creare_un_plugin_GDAL_per_il_supporto_ECW_.28DRAFT.29 (in Italian, sorry, but bash commands are international).
