If I understand you correctly, I believe you simply need to place the
cursor on the composer display and draw your rectangle. You will see a
rectangle item that can be changed to "cache" under the item tab to
view the current map canvas in your composer window. You can also make
other changes to that item, like removing the frame, setting
transparency, scale, size, etc.
