Brook,
Likely, you need to set the color options in the layer properties. I'm
not too familiar with how you do that correctly, but maybe someone
else will suggest the right steps.
I'm using a build from trunk and it sets the color table correctly for
me. You might try the 1.1.0 version if it is available for you OS.
Cheers,
John

Works fine for me. The link should have a lower case 'f' in the file

qgis,
but if you have gdal compiled with dem support, you should be good to
go.

Sorry about the wrong case. Unzipped it is an upper case F.
Perhaps, I wasn't clear enough. I downloaded the file, unzipped it,
and tried to import it into qgis v1.0.2. All I get is a gray
rectangle (although the histogram of gray scale values seems
reasonable). Here is the configuration of gdal:
gdal-config --formats
gxf gtiff hfa aigrid aaigrid ceos ceos2 iso8211 xpm sdts raw dted
mem jdem envisat elas fit vrt usgsdem l1b nitf bmp pcidsk airsar
rs2 ilwis rmf rik leveller sgi idrisi wcs bsb gif jpeg png
pcraster
My read of this is that gdal does have dem support.
I have compiled both gdal and qgis from source. Are there any
configuration options that I need to be paying attention to?
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Brook
