Hello,
I can reproduce the problem: Same here: QGIS starts, the splash screen
appears until loading python-plugins and then segfaulting, nothing is
written to the console. The package uim-qt3 is *not* installed...
System: Kubuntu Jaunty Jackalope, KDE 4.3
Python 2.6.2
The command on the console
sudo dpkg -l |grep qt3
brings
libavahi-qt3-1
libdbus-1-qt3
libqt3-mt
libqt4-qt3support
opera
qt3-assistant
qt3-doc
As the previous poster mentioned, with the update to KDE 4.3, some
python modules got an update...which one could be the culprit - the
segfault appears when QGIS starts to load python plugins...I have
installed and activated several of them...
best wishes,
Albin

Have you tried what I suggested? Configuring Qt should be independent
of the windows manager you're using.

Hi
I don't have the package uim-qt3 installed on my system, so the
problem must lie elsewhere.
Also, the solution Christy posted seems to be for GNOME users, and I'm
on KDE. As I mentioned earlier, Qgis was working fine until I did an
upgrade on some packages... Could it be that it is python related? I
do remember there being some python-kde4 and python-sip packages in
the upgrade. I noticed that I also can't start the eric4 IDE (which is
written in python), but aside from that (and Qgis) I can use my other
software as usual.
No one else having this problem? Help!?

Ricardo,
The solution that Christy Nieman posted may well work as well, but
the root
of the problem is likely that one of your qt3 packages isn't playing
nicely
with QGIS (and probably other qt applications as well).
The solution:
$ sudo apt-get remove uim-qt3
Let us know if that helps,

After typing qgis at the konsole I briefly see the splash window
loading qgis as usual and then it crashes. The only output I get at
the konsole window is "Segmentation fault". I can't read the whole
text that gets diplayed at the splash window, but I can confirm that
it gets to the "starting python" message (which I think was the last
message to be displayed usually)

Hi Ricardo,
Hello list
Today I upgraded my Kubuntu Jaunty, installing several new packages
(including the shinny kde 4.3). I thought everything went fine, but
now I can't start Qgis. It only gives me a "segmentation fault"
message in the konsole with nothing more.
Could you post the konsole output right up to the segfault?
Also, what was printed to the qgis splash screen?
Carson
