For the QGIS plugins: the QGIS contributed repository @ http://pyqgis.org/repo/contributed My earlier statement about the problem being possibly connected to "xubuntu-desktop" may be inaccurate. I recall having been able to run QGIS while using the Gnome desktop, and I may have tried to re-install the plugins and haven't remembered to run QGIS afterwards, hence not detecting the problem then.
