When I save Google Earth polygons or lines and look at the file, the first
point of the line or polygon has no coordinate and a phony projected
coordinate. Check if that is an issue for you. I don't know why that happens
on my system here, but a work around for me is to create a token first point
and delete it then with a program like garmin dnr (it's free) in case of
lines or in the case of polygons copy the last point into the space of the
first point.
I don't know if this is your issue, but again this happens regularly in my
system if I save GE layers.

Often times if the kml is downloaded from Google Maps, it's not the actual
data but only a link to the real data which is hosted online.
An easy way to check is to open the kml in a text editor, it will be quite
short and obvious if the actual x,y data is in the file.

See http://sites.google.com/site/gmapstips/export-my-map-as-kml for more
information.

If this isn't the issue and the data is public and you can point us to a
copy to test that would be great.

Thanks,
Alex
