Hi Walter
You migth already know this, but in Qgis in the layer properties Feilds pane
you can set up different Edit Widgets for the coulmns in your layer which
can help you if you should choose to interact with your data directly in
Qgis.

For example you can enter dates by choosing from a calender, you can browse
for file names, you can use check boxes or you can choose between predifined
values or ranges - 12 different Edit Widgets are available.

Perhaps this will be more convenient than the spreadsheet solution?
