M-value (M = Measure) is a length (route) used mainly in streams and linear features (also roads). For example, if a river is build by many single lines, you will be able to click on a line ad see how long it is. The M-value allow us to know where we are on the entire stream. I would like to display a ruler of the stream from the bottom (km zero) to the spring (x km), for example displaying the text "50 m" evey 50 m.
here a description on how to generate a routing in ESRI http://homepage.univie.ac.at/doris.riedl/model0910/tut_network/Netzwerk_Routes.htm In the data description that has been delivered with the .shp the M-values are decribed as "Domains" (in the screenshots are under +abgeleitet: länge, objekterkennung, x/y and x/y. Domains are used in the Geodatabases to describe/display feature classes, tables, subtypes (ESRI). I imagine that the M-value (the total lengt of the selected stream) is the attribute "Länge" under "abgeleitet". it would be helpful also to know if there is a tool in QGIS as described in the link (dynamischen Segmentierung) or some like that. I would then try to reproduce the M-vale with the original data.
