Thanks for the help guys. Currently I'm just kicking the tires on QGIS
to see if it can replace our current GIS system. While ArcGIS is a good
system I'm always on the hunt for something better/easier/cheaper. I'm
not sure if I could convince them to pay for development. I'm just a
lonely worker bee and have no control over the money.

Hi,
Currently there are only static solutions for road shields using
marker lines. No way to dynamically fill in road nrs from db fields.
Over at the qgis-dev list we discussed your request. Larry Schaffer
plans to work on it, extending the current label engine to have
background shapes.
You have to be patient. Will take a couple weeks.
If you would be willing to pay for the development it would speed up
things.

Hi Stephen
You can place a buffer around the text, that enhances readability
a lot. If you want to export your map to pdf or svg you should use
new-style labelling (the Icon with the letters “ABC” on the
toolbar), otherwise export fails. New-style labelling allows you
to place labels parallel to lines, could be quite useful too.
Other option (workaround) would be to have a shape layer with
white recta ngles beneath the text.
Maybe someone has a better idea.

Hello everyone. I've been playing with QGIS for a couple of days
now and really like it. My only problem is when labeling
features. Specifically roads. I would like to have the highway
number inside a shield (like signs on the road). I'm not sure how
to do this and my searches on the web haven't been fruitful. Is
this possible and if so can someone point me to it in the docs.
Thanks.
