These articles may be useful:

Join data from a CSV file:
http://www.qgis.nl/2012/07/13/koppelen-van-data-uit-csv-bestand/?lang=en

Directly use data from Excel file:
http://www.qgis.nl/2012/07/17/direct-gebruiken-van-data-uit-excel-bestand/?lang=en

Seems the excel import is version and/or platform dependent: In dev under linux mint, it doesn't work at all. Drag and drop produces "blabla.xls is not a valid or recognized data source" and through the normal vector adding dialog, there is no way to make the xls visible and selectable.

csvt-files are quite annoying as well. I think "old" excel-versions -> dbf or openoffice/libreoffice -> dbf are still the easiest ways to produce joinable tables ... unfortunately.

Maybe the string problem can be solved with mmqgis-plugin-> modify -> Text to Float (no fitting test data at hand)
