You're not supposed to start the .exe - run the .bat.
That works and I'll try to remember. Guess this only leaves the
question why the installer doesn't create the shortcuts it used to (in
the start menu and on the desktop) even though I had the checkboxes
ticked.
The icons will be created if the setup runs through completely.
Have a look at C:\OSGeo4w\var\setup.log or setup.log.full for errors.
