If you decide to try the spatialite option, post back, and I can give the details for:
* linking to a spreadsheet with new data
* migrating the new data to the existing spatialite layer
* updating the geometry based on the longitude/latitude columns

Why not adding new records directly to the file you imported, skipping the use of Excel?
