Hi Nick, Not that I'll definitely be able to help, but what sort of not opening properly? (and which QGIS?)
What should happen is that if you open the TIFF, then QGIS reads the tab file for coordinate system information and displays it. 1.9 is better at this than 1.8 was. -ramon.
