The simplest way to insert Google Maps or Satellite Imagery is to use
the OpenLayers Plugin.
select Plugins from the menu, select Manage and install plugins. In the
search bar type "open" (without quotes) and select install plugin.
Once that's done go to Plugins in the menu, highlight OpenLayers Plugin
and select "Add Satellite Layer" or select one of the many other layers
you may require.
One thing further, keep an eye on your CRS, The Project CRS can change
after adding the layer.
I hope this is of help,
Regards,

Richard.
