It will try to reuse the symbology of the layer, converting it to SLD (this is done using the core QGIS capabilities) and adapting it (this is done by the plugin, since it the SLD that GeoServer understands is not exactly what QGIS produces). It should work for the most usual symbologies, but if your layer uses something more complex, It is not likely that it will work completely.
