As to comparison between Rule based and Categorising, they would both be pretty much the same, I often utilise categorising to initially style a layer, and then change it to a Rule Based, for fine tuning. They are basically the same thing, but rule based offers you a little more control. Again, the complexity of the style and how well you have indexed your database makes a difference.
