Oh Dear, I have just tried to follow the tip from Nicolas above about reloading files into a new empty project. This time this does not work. I have just loaded a county outline and a coastal line with default styling and the scale bar still says 0:1. Now What? Any ideas? Regards to all. NB QGIS 3 would be really magic without all this stuff.
