Not addressing your general concern, but upgrading to GDAL 3.1.0 will fix that particular point: update of .shp.zip is now supported. (performance will probably not be rocketting if the .shp.zip is too big) Even -- Spatialys - Geospatial professional services http://www.spatialys.com
