Woot!
I guess that's the one area I am fuzzy on is How QGIS interacts with
GPS's. It seems like it's looking for either a com or USB port. Which
with lets say you have a Bluetooth I'm not sure what you would do (I
have yet to do the Bluetooth -> laptop -> QGIS Dance because I don't
hate my life enough currently). I've connected external GPS (USBs) alot
using GPSgate and supposedly Windows 10 will let you do the same thing
if you configure the settings.....I guess that depends on How the GPS is
hooked into the Laptop.
Anyway - **Official disclaimer** Don't drive down the road looking at
your laptop and wreck.

Randal, i think you've just cracked it for me! gpsgate seems to have
got the gps talking to qgis. many thanks for the help, people.

Unfortunately I don't have one to test (but someone I can call)
Two things to check:
1. Right Click in your QGIS toolbar area and activate your GPS
information panel. See if you're connecting to the GPS. Autodetect
should tell you something.
2. I've used the GPS Gate Splitter Software [1] on Windows 7/10 to
connect QGIS to an External GPS. Haven't had the joy to do
Bluetooth/internal GPS's but I'd expect Gate Splitter to at least
get you connected on an internal....... Although I've heard
Windows 10 has something similiar "in the guts" to make that work
(no hardware to test that on). Once you install Gate Splitter QGIS
should autodetect the GPS.
Good Luck - and I think this will work but as I type this I'm
starting to think this might be slightly out of date thinking.

Nicolas, the Toughbook definitely has a GPS as i can test the
connection using the GPS software - and i have tried it in
various places.
John, i have copied the project and files on to the desktop with
the same results. i have also tried it without any data to see if
it can pick my position up whilst using only a basemap but still
no luck.

Some more information might be needed. Is it possible your
QGIS data resides in a server and not on your local machine?
Perhaps the Toughbook knows where it is, but can't display
the underlying map layers because it can't connect to the
server? That would also explain why it works when you are in
wifi service.

Daniel Green from Québec?
I would start by testing in a wide open field. Is the
problem with the GPS in the laptop or with the connection
with QGIS? If it’s the later, explain what you are doing and
what versions of QGIS using. If you only get a position with
the wifi, maybe you don’t have an actual GPS chip. Look at
the computer specs. Some tablettes (iPods also) and rare
phone only use wifi for positioning and do not use an actual
GPS chip. Make sure you are not in airplane mode with
antenna’s turned off.

I have been trying to use QGIS for live mapping on my
Panasonic Toughbook Cf19 MK7 but I cannot get the GPS to
connect when in the field. The software on the Toughbook
shows it is picking up satellites so I am confident it isn’t
the hardware. When I try to connect it occasionally picks up
my location if I have wi-fi but without it never does.
Any ideas what might be going wrong?
