A 'shapefile' is a collection of at least different files with extension .shp, .shx, .dbf and .prj. So if you rename one of them it doesn't work. You must rename all the sidecar files. Better yet, open original shapefile in QGIS, right-click, Export , Save Features As and save it with the new name.
