Thanks for the pointer and the information. I had done some more reading and was a bit confused by the reference to tiles, but that's apparently how rasters are stored.
The gdal references explain the default settings, which are compressed, just not at the highest level.
The warning about the lossy compression as default is very useful, thank you.
