HI Scot, if you have a qgis window open, and open your finder window, you
should be able to drag data sources directly from your downloads folder
into qgis. You may need to unzip some of the data sources first.

Maybe someone who is more familiar with QGIS on a mac or the tutorial can
chime in with how to follow the instructions more closely but hopefully
that can get you started.
