i have imported a shapefile.   When i do so, i would like to edit the line

this new line without altering the original file?
After importing the shapefile, i am unable to select the line and toggle

how does one copy an existing shapefile without it linked to original data and
how can i activate it for editing?

Right click on layer, Export / Save Features as .. then select a format (eg
shapefile),
save it with another name (and default QGIS will also open it),
and edit THAT file (s as a shapefile is actually a set of files).

Hope this works for you.
