I am not sure, but maybe you have to load a kernel module for msdos?
BTW Do you want to read media that were written by a digicam or
just using it as a sort of "micro drive"? If the latter is the case
you can also partition it with atari-fdisk and then put sms file system 
on it, which I very succesfully do.

I don't think it makes sense to put it there. It's so a large file.
And you can get it from sites like kernel.org
