I do not know any expert, but I have a book with the ESC/P2 programming information. The user-defined-font loading is barely two pages in it.
(this book is for the Canon BJC600, which has a compatibility mode with ESC/P2: the font definition is 24 bits height, variable in width. I never tried to define my own font for that printer)
