Check on a PC that the serial mouse is working. sH can cope with two and
three button mice, but the PC will need a two button one (MS if there is
a switch under the mouse).

The easiest way is to open a known file on RomDisq. If there is an error
then RomDisq is either not there, or faulty. I do not know how error
support is implemented under SMSQ - but using that you could ensure the
test does not crash the program.
There might be a system PEEK, but I don't know.

I would recommend booting entirely off RomDisq. I even have a RESPR
version of the qubide driver that loads using a ramn file on ROmDisq.
This means that you have a usable system even if the hard disk has
troubles. I also put all my programs on RomDisq. I very rarely write
to it. Make sure though that you have a back-up boot floppy that loads
the sH drivers. That way you are covered even if RomDisq (and HD) fail.

Sorry for my confusing feedback. I have not had to configure anything
on my sH for so many years now.
