pretty annoying ;-)
Apart from that I think the only halfway decent time source is the
50Hz interrupt, but I'm not sure how to best utilize it from Basic.
I usually need a small assembler part to do it, but perhaps there's
a
better way.

I suppose you could cut the wire to the speaker (or turn the PC
speaker off) ;-)
